FILM NOIR: FROM DARKNESS TO LIGHT (2006)

Better than average Turner documentary on Film Noir has a bit more sophistication than is standard for the format thanks to commentary from a few unusual suspects. Composers, cinematographers, & editors are added to the typical mix of actors with banal comments, critics shopping pet theories & directors with nothing to say. Even so, halfway thru the modest running time, it falls victim to repetition & cliche, over-referencing clips from CLASH BY NIGHT and BORN TO KILL while neglecting noir’s genre friendly adaptability in woman’s pics (LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN), musicals (THE BANDWAGON). bio-pics (THE JOKER IS WILD) and so forth. But the DVD makes itself indispensable with it’s add-on of five ‘Crime Does Not Pay’ two-reelers which has early efforts from Fred Zinnemann & Joseph Losey plus an outstanding mini ‘noir,’ The Luckiest Guy In The World, featuring a baby-faced Barry Nelson.
