Long but sturdy Robert Aldrich pic about a plane that tanks in the middle of a desert remains highly watchable, although who remembered that the plot, structure & characters were lifted from Alfred Hitchcock’s LIFEBOAT, which also found time for a memorable sex angle. (Hard to imagine Tallulah Bankhead hanging around with this crew.) You’d never guess it from the honest meat-&-potatoes perfs, but the cast is studded with Oscar’d thesps (James Stewart, Peter Finch, Ernest Borgnine, George Kennedy, Richard Attenborough*), but Ian Bannen, Christain Marquand, Dan Duryea (in a rare nice guy role) and a perfectly cast Hardy Kruger do at least as well. *RA’s Oscar was for direction.
