FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS (2004)

Films tend to glorify their subject matter, so no matter how much balance Peter Berg attempts, his adaptation of Bissinger’s bruising look at TX High School football culture turns into rah-rah stuff. The actual game footage is indifferently managed and Berg shows a novice’s lack of trust in his audience with an over-active camera & under-characterized writing. A fine perf by the kid with the alcoholic dad stands out, but the acclaim for FNL shows how low we’ve moved the bar. (Was I alone rooting for all-black team to knock out these kids?)
