THE GETAWAY (1972)

Lucien Ballard ’s lensing and Robert Wolfe’s editing make Sam Peckinpah’s 1972 bank heist/car chase pic look great, with wonderfully sharp, readable action sequences. It may be straight commercial fare that shows Peckinpah on auto-pilot during his heyday, but Walter Hill ’s terse script & well-structured plotting hold up (Don Siegel couldn’t fault the narrative design), as does much of the casting with Sally Struthers and Slim Pickens as standouts. Ali McGraw is also a standout, but for all the wrong reasons. Her flat delivery and blank stares make happy misogynists of us all when Steve McQueen slaps the hell outta her and keeps smiling. And the then novel crime-does-pay ending still carries a bit of a kick to it.
