THE GIRL IN THE RED VELVET SWING (1955)

Off-putting fact-based love triangle with Ray Milland as NYC architect Stanford White, Joan Collins as showgirl Evelyn Nesbit & Farley Granger as disturbed man-about-town Harry K. Thaw. Granger, fresh from the sophisticated world of Visconti’s masterful SENSO, is so peevish & creepy as the rich mother-fixated playboy that his Hollywood career came to a screeching halt. With her raven hair, boobs, posh accent & slim waist, 20th/Fox thought Collins could be another Elizabeth Taylor. Didn’t they notice that Liz is only at her best playing sincere while Collins can only be believed when she’s insincere. Helmer Richard Fleischer, coming off a wonderful ‘B’ (NARROW MARGIN) and a classic ‘A’ (20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA) is miscast for a story that needs an Ophuls or a Sirk at the helm. A classic American story becomes uncompelling.
