THE GRAND ROLE (2005)

An attractive cast and a perfectly fine idea are wasted in this sudsy farce from helmer Steve Suissa. In Paris, five Jewish acting pals (30-somethings just hanging in there) are up for the role of Shylock in an all-Yiddish pic, the dream project of Speilbergian megger (Peter Coyote). Stephane Freiss (too old for his film character & too young for Shylock) thinks he’s got the job, but when it goes to a ‘name’ actor he can’t bear to disappoint the wife (Berenice Bejo) who’s just informed him that she’s got terminal cancer. OY! Mustn’t disappoint the little patient, so Freiss & pals work out an elaborate ruse to hide the truth. Yep, It’s LOVE STORY meets THE LUCY SHOW. The Paris acting milieu & Juif background stuff is not without interest and packing it up as a Feydeau/Molnar Blvd Comedie has merit, but not this. And anyway, who in their right mind would want to make an all-Yiddish version of THE MERCHANT OF VENICE?
