HINDLE WAKES (1927)

Maurice Elvey is dimly recalled as the hack director who was assigned to "fix" Hitchcock’s unreleasable MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH, by that film’s addlleheaded producer. It never happened, & the film "made" Hitch. Yet here’s a fine late silent by Elvey proving, yet again, how EVERYONE delivered amazing pics at the end of the silent era. This beautifully realized film tells the old tale of the industrialist’s son who "has his way" with a working-class lass & almost marries below his class. Only noble lies & sacrifices by the common folk set things straight. Estelle Brody is superb as the tough girl in question, but what really gives the slightly overlong film its kick are the documentary aspects of mill town life and the striking amusement park footage from Blackpool. Beautifully restored and scored, too.
