Alan Bennett’s rapturously acclaimed Prep School play looks simultaneously tarted up & stale under Nicholas Hytner’s amateurish megging. Rarely have the pointlessly fussy camera moves now in vogue been so clearly revealed as sham technique than when applied to Bennett ’s literate dialogue in this My-Favorite-Teacher yarn. As the eccentric Prof with a yen for young flesh, Richard Griffiths keeps his multi-award winning role fresh (but his twist of fate reeks of theatrical morality circa 1950, as do the dated cultural references - Rodgers & Hart, BRIEF ENCOUNTER and Piaf as ‘pop’ touchstone references in a story set in 1983?). Jamie Parker as the church-going lad shines brightest of the boys and curmudgeonly Frances de la Tour is sublime.
