A HOLE IN THE HEAD (1959)

Frank Capra’s penultimate pic has a miserable rep, but this sour dramedy is one his few post-WONDERFUL LIFE credits that feel as if he’s still interested in making movies. It's a slick B’way vehicle (spiked with deadly 'sure thing' laugh lines), but it boasts something chilling underneath the shiny surface that hooks you. Frank Sinatra is painfully right as the underachieving single-dad chump/dreamer; and the film is superbly cast (Edward G. Robinson, Thelma Ritter, Carolyn Jones, Keenan Wynn & Eleanor Parker playing good step-Mom which makes for a nice contrast against her ice-Queen SOUND OF MUSIC role.) Eddie Hodges, just out of B’way’s MUSIC MAN, is a phenomenal kid performer, and earns his share of the "High Hopes" duet, unexpectedly shot/recorded 'live,' a daring decision by Capra that really pays off. A lot of great Miami location pick-ups are memorably captured by vet lenser William Daniels and should keep you hanging in right thru the defiantly upbeat, if utterly (purposely?) unconvincing 'happy ending.'
