HOMBRE (1967)

The last and least of Paul Newman’s "H" films (HUSTLER, HUD, HARPER) now looks stridently PC with Paul as an Apache martyred for our sins. But not before having to move to the back of the stagecoach! Mistaking self-indulgence for insolence, Newman tanks, but no more than the rest of the cast with only a gleefully villainous Richard Boone bringing much to the party. Martin Ritt shows what a dull dog of a director he can be even with James Wong Howe on camera, while fave Newman scripters Ravetch & Frank pile on the exposition and liberal angst. Can Elmore Leonard ’s adapted novel be such a dreary wade?
