HORSE FEATHERS (1932)

Though DUCK SOUP remains primus inter pares of the final three Paramount Marx Bros pics, let’s emphasize the pares on this collegiate Dadaist comedy. For a change, all four boys get a chance to shine, even Zeppo, looking strikingly like NYC Mayor Mike Bloomfield! And it’s a treat to have the young & curvy Thelma Todd playing off Groucho. She brings out something sexy & dangerous that dowager supreme Margaret Dumont couldn’t bring to the mix. The catchy theme song ("Everyone Says I Love You") makes up for sub-par musical breaks for Chico & Harpo, but there’s nothing sub-par about the gags, pace and nonsequiturs.
