HOTEL RWANDA (2004)

An extraordinary tru-life story of how a Rwandan manager at a 4-star Euro-catering hotel sheltered over 1000 of his fellow countrymen during the 1994 civil war/genocide, saving almost all of them from certain death. Don Cheadle and most of the cast give everything they’ve got to get the basics across, and that turns out to be enough. Watch for a stunning perf from Hakeem Kae-Kazim as a general who’s rotten, if not quite to the core. But it must be said that considering the material’s inherent possibilities, the film barely touches on the life & death absurdities of how this oasis of stately service & manners stood as a psychological fortress of protection. Snippets, like the bellhops politely keeping the rain off of guests, impotent UN types, ideological rebels & corrupt generals, keep showing the sort of fever storm of irony & Dante Circle in Hell the film keeps veering away from. Worthwhile, but it could have been so much more.
