Though it slants its Conan Doyle story into an Agatha Christie style murder mystery, this late entry in the Universal Sherlock Holmes series feels more respectful than their norm; and it’s updated in a manner that feels true to its original period setting. Basil Rathbone shows remarkably little concern as one character after another gets bumped off in TEN LITTLE INDIAN style, but this turns out to be part of the climactic twist. Typically, Universal hasn’t the contract list to supply enough memorable supporting players, they're a dull lot, but director Roy William Neill & lenser Virgil Miller know where to lay in the shadowy backgrounds.
