Three decades after it’s initial (flop) release, this endearingly silly pic about the day The Beatles came to NYC and first appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show plays better than when it was new. Megger Robert Zemeckis worked up a big shiny image of Manhattan/’64 and the quadrilateral plotlines are all fun to follow with each set of characters getting just the right payoff. But though he cleverly stages the climactic telecast to both reveal and conceal real shots of the Liverpudlians (they were barely speaking in ‘78), the bread & butter physical slapstick & action stuff is awfully stiff and the biggest influence on the piece isn’t 60's Pop culture at all, but 1973's AMERICAN GRAFFITI.
