KINSEY (2004)

With a great subject, a funny & provocative script, and strong performances, Bill Condon’s bio-pic on the crusading sex researcher should be more involving. The ripe but neat compositions and cinematography don’t come alive and miss the spirit of the times. It was a prophylactic society, culturally and politically, in its comfortable Eisenhower world of hats, gloves, pearl chokers and button down shirts. Having a bunch of eggheads & nerds leading the sexual breakthroughs of the day should have been a lot more winning. Tellingly, Condon has us view the non-pornographic sex films made by Kinsey’s team rather than show the filming which might have really tested our own comfort level. Worthy, but it coulda been great.
