MARCH OF THE PENGUINS (2005)

As splendid as this hugely successful documentary on the mind-boggling breeding habits of the Antarctic Emperor penguins is, you can’t help feel we’ve been palmed off with the junior edition. The fuller original French cut supposedly has less hand-holding narration and could easily have fit on the DVD so we could compare the two cuts. But why court competition? Worse yet, the DVD opens with a promo for HOT FEET featuring a cute-as-a-button dancing CGI penguin which reads as a slap in the face to all the extraordinary efforts made in getting one staggering shot after another in the real world. Hollywood knows no shame. Luckily, HOT FEET turned out to be a fine entertainment in its own way. Whew. Close one.
