SCENE OF THE CRIME (1986)

French helmer Andre Techine took up the cudgels for classic narrative cinema with this exceptional modern noir. Sampling bits of GREAT EXPECTATIONS, ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’ and THE RECKLESS MOMENT, this is a twisty tale of forced coincidences and guilt that follows a troubled teen and his mom when a convict on the lam crosses their path. Techine’s masterful control of composition, editing & pace makes you believe not only in the far-fetched story, but in the continual renewal of the medium. The unbeatable cast is topped by Catherine Deneuve at her very best. She knew it, too, and has worked repeatedly with Techine. Smart gal. Smart film.
