ACT OF VIOLENCE (1949)

Exceptional noir about two WWII vets: a well-adjusted family man (wife, kid, home, business) played by Van Heflin, and his old war pal, an emotionally & physically crippled psychopath with nothing to lose (etched in acid by Robert Ryan) and out for revenge. M-G-M was never a friendly studio for noir’s dark stylings, but Fred Zinnemann somehow got this one made on the cheap so they left him and ace lenser Robert Surtees do as they liked. And they liked this one to be black as night and downright scary, with plenty of guilt to go around. Janet Leigh is very pretty & surprisingly strong as the young wife, while Mary Astor all but steals the show as a street-savvy L.A. hooker who’s seen better days.
