One of the rare foreign language films to win a regular competitive Oscar (and to deserve one), Pietro Germi’s misanthropic comedy of marital mores & murder plays better than ever. With its inventive technique & seering high contrast B&W lensing, the laughs (often brilliantly punctuated by Carlo Rustichelli’s score) all leave a bitter taste of reason in their wake. Marcello Mastroianni manages the trick of being impossibly broad & subtle (Hollywood mega-star comedians, please take note) as he waits for his opportunity to shed a wife & gain a young lover. Pricelessly, often screamingly funny, with pitch perfect casting and a snazzy technical sheen that boosts Germi’s savage comedy. Even MM’s coifs abet the action.
