BITTER MOON (1992)

Roman Polanski’s sex farce tragique is bizarre and entertaining, though never erotic. On purpose? With surprising parallels to Hitchcock’s equally odd RICH AND STRANGE/’32, we cruise (with) a married couple hitting their 7-year itch (Hugh Grant & Kristin Scott-Thomas in disfiguring coifs) who bond w/ a sexually/ psychologically masochistic pair (Peter Coyote & Emmanuelle Seigner). Through outrageous tales (true & false) and gamesmanship, they are repelled and drawn in. Polanski never reveals his game plan, but if you can accept the raunch (and Seigner’s inept acting), it’s giddy stuff until the mistaken/messy ending.
