BITTER VICTORY (1957)

Even restored with 20 extra minutes, this Nicholas Ray WWII meller doesn’t raise enough interest as noble Richard Burton and ignoble Curt Jurgens steal German documents while smoldering over who Ruth Roman hopes will make it back to headquarters. It’s talky, erratically staged and simply not as ironically intriguing as Ray must have hoped. You can feel the loss of confidence in the film as it plays out.
