BLOOD FOR DRACULA (1974)

The pics Paul Morrissey made with/for/as Andy Warhol have a historic & cultural cachet they can’t live up to. (Or is that down to?) And the naughtier they try to be, the sooner you notice the slow leak dragging ‘em down. But his Dracula does better then most at pulling off its combo of blood, sex, class parable & yucks ("ha, ha" & "ugh") than the earlier artlessly arty epics. Perhaps because the Dracula myth is such a ready-made sex allegory, Morrissey doesn’t have to force the tone on this story about a dearth of virgin blood making the Count sick to his stomach. As the Marxist handyman, Joe Dallesandro displays his bod & Noo Yawk accent in rather conventional fashion & his stoned/grunge mystique is missed.
