BOOM TOWN (1940)

This big, handsome, utterly impersonal M-G-M blockbuster was the third & final pairing of Clark Gable & Spencer Tracy, now in the oil biz & vying over Claudette Colbert. Hack megger Jack Conway can’t hide the odd bifurcated structure: Part I - Colbert comes out West to marry Tracy, but falls for Gable; Part II - after many ups & downs, Hedy Lamarr (finally) appears and tries to steal Clark, but Spence, still pining for Claudette, manages to push Hedy out of the pic. And then there’s an anti-trust trial. Wha? Colbert & Gable maintain a special chemistry and Tracy pulls out some of his darker acting colors toward the end. Watch him poke at Lamarr to make a point. Added fun: watch the cute filler, HOLLYWOOD HOBBIES, an early credit for kid helmer George Sidney. It was written by Morey (Dick Van Dyke Show) Amsterdam and has Buster Keaton & Mary Pickford playing some charity baseball.
