BORDER INCIDENT (1949)

M-G-M wasn’t known for low-budget noir, but Anthony Mann managed a few in the late 40s/early 50s, before moving on to bigger things. (His Abe Lincoln conspiracy pic, THE TALL TARGET/'51, is begging for a first class redo.*) This one’s a docu-flavored, still topical illegal Mexican labor shocker that’s particularly tense & gruesome with tasty perfs (second leads George Murphy & Howard de Silva really get to squirm while Ricardo Montalban is sturdy & amazingly handsome), all under the bold lensing of 'Prince of Darkness' John Alton at his blackest.

SCREWY THOUGHT OF THE DAY:  *Robert Redford thought so too, but his Lincoln assassination pic is about the successful conspiracy!  (And, alas, not first class.)
