THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA (2003)

From Argentina comes this little anti-romantic/thriller with strong comic elements. It shows too much talent to write off, but scripter/helmer Damian Szifron keeps missing his marks. Promising architecture student spots a man under his girlfriend’s bed and jealously/zealously trails & hazes the guy only to overhear what sounds like a threat. Is his two-timing lover in danger? Is he? Is he a paranoid dope misreading all the clues? All this is pointlessly book-ended with some waterlogged diving lessons and you have yourself a film that could have benefitted with some old-fashioned studio interference. It’s all quite watchable, the good cast & low-budget/unfussy technique helps, but it’s impossible not to reconstruct this in your head as the sort of dark comedy Martin Scorsese flubbed in AFTER HOURS.
