Andre Techine, France’s last great film classicist, strikes silver rather than his usual gold standard in this typically fascinating relationship motivated drama about love deferred. Construction supervision Gerard Depardieu latest project takes him to Tangiers where his true personal mission is to rekindle a romance with Catherine Deneuve after 30 years. She hardly welcomes the idea at first, but rethinks her priorities to break thru the vague miasma of disquiet of a hollow life with her self-absorbed 2nd hubby and her lack of connection to her bi-sexual son. With his usual lack of fuss, Techine draws a portrait of lives compromised, this time in a foreign society they can’t quite fathom. The story line has a few too many convenient crises and by-chance meetings for its own good, but the multiple character arcs resonate with surprising depth.
