Largely ignored Arthur Miller scripted film, helmed by Karel Reisz, eccentrically & good-naturedly tackles a sort of sun-kissed film noir. Nick Nolte is the New England private eye hired by a zany tart with multiple personality problems (Debra Winger) to clear an innocent kid railroaded on a murder rap. The truth is buried in layers of town corruption & drug money, but Winger is connected to all the possible leads, so getting a straight story out of her that won’t implicate someone she feels indebted to is impossible. Plus, she’s so conditioned to gratify men, every compliment, encouragement or tale she tells is suspect. An exceptional cast all get great character bits to run with & Nolte’s in peak form while Winger, working out Miller’s best attempt at coming-to-terms with his Marilyn Monroe fixation, is a bit pressed covering such a messy emotional minefield. Smooth it ain’t, but it’s a real surprise and most entertaining.
