FIGHTING CARAVANS (1931)

Forgotten Paramount antique Western is no great find and historical interest is diminished by generic underscoring added some years after the original release. Fortunately, the picture elements remain in good enough shape to enjoy some fine location stuff on this umpteenth rip-off of THE COVERED WAGON. An impossibly slim Gary Cooper stars with sidekicks Ernest Torrence & Jim Tully as trail scouts, who are more worried about Coop falling for cute French gal Lily Damita than watching out for marauding ‘Injuns.’ David Butler & Otto Brower share megging credit and it was probably Butler who’s responsible for the deadly dialogue scenes. Fortunately, there’s often something arresting to look at and a lot of good actors doing bits; Eugene Palette, Charles Winninger & Jane Darwell all show up.
