This visually inventive film (B&W ‘scope, my fave) from Seijun Suzuki tries to cover a lot of sociological bases following the troubled middle-school career of Kiroku Nanbu (Hideki Takahashi), who finds himself hormonally out of control over his Catholic girlfriend; in rebellion against the authority of relatives & teachers; and always fighting various school gangs who constantly compete to prove their tough superiority in the militaristic schools he spends most of his time pouting in. It’s Rebel Without a Sword. The combination of comic riffs & ultra-violent samurai trappings between the students creates shifts in tone that are unfathomable to a non-Japanese, but at 86 minutes it certainly holds your attention.
