FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE (1926)

Handsomely produced Harold Lloyd laffer about a multi-millionaire who falls for the daughter of a Bowery missionary is one of his best.   It’s lesser known than SAFETY LAST or THE FRESHMAN, but not by comedy writers who’ve been stealing from it for decades without in any way robbing it of its own charm and spontaneity.   The story is very small indeed (Harold mistakenly funds Pop’s mission, but falls for his girl and dives into his new calling), but it feels just right and the stunningly worked out comic-action sequences are a riot.  Literally.  Try to see this in its beautiful restoration on the fine new "Lloyd Authorized" DVD set from New Line which also features an excellent new score from Robert Israel.
