Though far from pristine, Lon Chaney’s silent classic has been much spiffed up in the latest edition from Image DVD; too bad they couldn’t spiff up the contents which suffer from amateurish megging by Wallace Worsley and over-parted actors in most of the roles; Nigel de Brulier & Tully Marshall, excepted. The Charles Laughton/Maureen O’Hara/Wm. Dieterle version from 1939 is superior in every way with Laughton far less hammy than Chaney. Honest. (On the other hand, folks as different as Pauline Kael & Orson Welles, kids back in ‘23, held this film & Chaney’s perf high in their affectionate memories.) Chaney’s other iconic role, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, also has a vacancy in the director’s chair, Rupert Julian, though it’s somehow less crucial there. Chaney’s best work, under helmers Tod Browning, George Hill & Victor Sjostrom, still awaits discovery by the masses.
