HUSTLE & FLOW (2005)

Moving beyond hookers with hearts of gold, scripter/helmer Craig Brewer ennobles their pimp (not methinks a change for the better) and his musical/philosophical credo. Just how much of this hip-hop CinderFella story we’re supposed to swallow is unclear, but to his credit, Brewer pulls off the first two-thirds with cool laid-back pacing & a super cast. Terrence Howard brings his Buddha-like leading man reserve to his pimp striver & his cohorts (whores & techies who create a commercial demo tape) make for a winning, pleasingly motley crew. Some lines of action are overdrawn, but you go along with their impossible hip-hop dream until the melodrama erupts in a third act that’s both jarring & pandering in a film that already feels two reels too long.
