WHY CHANGE YOUR WIFE (1920)

Cecil B. De Mille quickly followed his ‘bored wife’ marital comedy (DON’T CHANGE YOUR HUSBAND/1919,  https://maksquibs.blogspot.com/2008/05/dont-change-your-husband-1919.html) with this ‘bored husband’ number.  This time, Gloria Swanson, as a prim & proper wife, loses Thomas Meighan to the amusingly avaricious Bebe Daniels.   But all Gloria needs is a quick call to the costume department and a convenient medical crisis to win back his affection and reveal Daniels’ true colors.  Everyone’s just going thru the motions on this one and De Mille can’t even rouse himself for one of his trademark historical parallel scenes.  Fortunately, the Image DVD edition comes with brother William de Mille’s far superior MISS LULU BETTS (https://maksquibs.blogspot.com/2008/05/miss-lulu-bett-1921.html).  Don’t miss it.
